THREE alumni of the premier Alpha Phi Omega in the University of the Philippines-Diliman (Eta Chapter) led the list of APO Philippines honorees in a testimonial dinner held 10 July 2010 at the SMX Mall of Asia.

Vice President Jejomar C. Binay ‘60, Aurora Governor Bellaflor J. Angara-Castillo (KPO), and Pangasinan Provincial Board Member Mojamito R. Libunao ’59 are among the 155 brothers and sisters of APO who won in the May 2010 elections.

“Over-all the Dinner was a great testament that our fraternal organization had entered a higher level,” said APO National President Magleo V. Adriano ’69.

It was a record for APO in terms of the number of APOs gathered in a single non-biennial event. Adriano said that more than 1,000 brothers and sisters attended the historic event honoring Binay and others winners for senator, congressman, governors/vice-governors, mayors/vice-mayor, provincial board members, and councilors.

The UP APO Alumni and the Eta International Service Foundation held joint elections last night at the Metro Club, Makati, in accordance with the approved amended by-laws. Brod Luis Paredes will be posting the amended by-laws which revised the organizational structure of both association and foundation. Elected president of the association is Brod Manny Clarino and chairman of the foundation is Brod Jojo Binay. Among the innovations: four members elected at large to each body; six decade representatives (50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s) to each body, nominated by their respective decades; the GC and GLC automatic members representing the collegiates; the head of the ETAANA is also automatic member who will designate his Philippine-based representative. The term of office is two years to commence on January 2010 up to December 2011. The Executive Vice President/Chair will succeed in the next term as president/chair of each body. APO Comelec Brod Armand Arevalo supervised the election and will be posting the results for the rest of the officers. Patunay na may galit pa rin sa amin, ako naelect sa association at ang kabatch kong si Brod Bing Mangosing naelect sa Foundation. Lagot kayo lahat.

Among the welcome scuttlebutt is that Brod Gen Jojie will be a shoo-in as Chief of Staff whoever wins in the 2010 presidential election assuring an Eta presence in the defense-police establishment together with Brod Director Jess Versoza. Mabuhay ang Eta!

We also bid adieu to Brod Nick Cabalza who was given the necro rites last Thursday night. Brod Bot Hernandez said that the investigators are closing in on the assailants.

Since February 2009, APO-Eta Chapter alumni members, affiliates and supporters (mostly from the 1980s and 1970s) have turned over multimedia desktop computers to selected elementary schools in Miagao, Iloilo Philippines. Funds, computer hardware, software, and children’s books mostly came from brods and sis from the USA. Funds were collected by Brod Alex Tamayo in the US and Brod Andy de los Reyes in the Philippines. Hardware and books were sent by Sis Melody Ang-Gayon and Brod Honeyboy Fajota. The turnover of computer units from the latter donor is being planned. By the school opening in June, three brand new and two second hand computer systems were turned over to the following elementary enclaves:

1. Doane Christian Fellowship Academy, 52 students

2. Miagao West Central Elementary School, 560 sudents

3. Guibongan-Igtuba Elementary School, 530 students

Recently, two desktop computer units were donated by Brod Vicente Mayor, Eta Chapter, Batch 1964-A (Four Horsemen). Brod Tito sent the computers from New Jersey, as he was preparing to return to the Philippines for good. Speakers were bought to complete the multimedia package. The units were donated to a previous recipient, the Igtuba-Guibongan Elementary School. The school caters to the primary education needs of poor farming families of Miagao. Teachers of the school were highly appreciative of the donation. Principal Celsa Negrido plans to invite Etans for the opening of their computer education program. Her representative can be reached at cellphone 0929-4837-608 for further information. Image below is the handing of certificates of appreciation for this particular donation.

Almost a decade ago Brod Sinfronio Balderama, Batch 1963-A (7-7 Bulbas of the APO Cossacks), began this practice of donating infotech-based hardware support to educational institutions in Iloilo. In 2000 Brod Frony donated a brand new computer and printer to UP Visayas, Miagao Campus. The advocacy and physical presence of an Etan teaching at UPV has helped facilitate and monitor these kinds of education-related service projects.

The APO-Eta experience in Miagao, Iloilo has attracted multisectoral support from Parent-Teacher’s Associations, local government, and NGOs (e.g. Rotary Club) who have provided counterpart labor or financial support. These initiatives improve the reputation of APO collegiate chapters in Iloilo Province and, provide a training ground in the conduct of off-campus service projects. It illustrates that APO-Eta service projects need not be high-profile and expensive to achieve inter-generational unity, cooperation among various stakeholders, sustainability and success.
