CoA bags external auditor role for world health body

THE COMMISSION on Audit (CoA) has been voted external auditor of the World Health Organization (WHO), the first for the country, a Palace spokesman said yesterday. Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda shared the good news over a forwarded text message of CoA Chairman Ma. Gracia Pulido-Tan (’73).

“We have just won the position of external auditor…We beat Germany, France, Spain and Malaysia. We were number one in the first round, then beat Germany 74-62 in the runoff,” Ms. Tan said.

Ms. Tan said the choice of CoA was a vote of confidence in its “resurgence” in the international community. Mr. Lacierda said in a separate text message that this was the third time that the Philippines bid for the position. The country lost to India. Ms. Tan is now in Geneva, Switzerland with CoA Commissioner Heidi L. Mendoza and Health Secretary Enrique T. Ona attending the 64th assembly of the World Health Organization

The APO chapters who participated in the event included University of the Philippines in Diliman, University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Medical Center, Our Lady of Fatima, Lagro and Manila Doctors. The service was done at the Baranggay UP Campus Health Center from 8AM to 5PM.

Despite the unbearable heat of the day, the service project was deemed a success and “filled with fun.” The boys who underwent circumcision together with their parents eagerly queued in line early in the morning to have their names listed to avail of the free circumcision and medical check up. Free snacks and medicines donated by fraternity brothers, sorority sisters and benevolent donors were also distributed to the patients and parents.

“This service project is just a speck of what our fraternity and sorority has been doing since the very first day of our foundation in 1925 and we intend to do it as often as possible to share what we have to the needy,” remarks Bing Lasam, the Grand Chancellor of the Eta Chapter from the University of the Philippines at Diliman. “Doing services to help our fellowmen is the solid foundation that keeps our fraternity and sorority strong and healthy. This is also what binds our brothers and sisters together. But despite that, we believe that the experience and happiness brought about by sharing what we know and what we have is something money cannot buy and we think that it is a moral responsibility everyone should be doing.”

“Indeed, this service project was a success not only to the eyes of the Alpha Phi Omega International Collegiate Service Fraternity and Sorority but also to the boys who were circumcised and their parents.
