The Alpha Phi Omega remains an active campus force in almost all aspects of university and college life. It has always engaged into sponsoring college and university events, partnering or linking with other organizations and institutions, participating in campus politics, and spearheading meaningful and relevant advocacies. True to its cardinal principles of Leadership, Friendship and Service, Alpha Phi Omega has always sought to develop leaders from among its ranks of brothers and sisters through the conduct of service projects, be it great or small, that benefit the students and faculty, the college, the community and the nation at large.
Pursuit of Academic Excellence and Scholarship
In the promotion of academic excellence and scholarship, Alpha Phi Omega in the University of the Philippines had already taken steps to realize that objective. The Fraternity established the Rolando T. Abad Scholarship Program in the ’70s and ’80s for the benefit of the students, especially scholars from the UP College of Engineering.
Residents brothers and sisters take cognizance of the importance of academic excellence in their university life. Academics Committee was created to assist members and friends in dealing with their academics. Group studies have regularly been held. Tutorial sessions have been institutionalized. Inside the fraternity/sorority, discipline is instilled to each member, for the prime duty of a brother/sister is to STUDY HARD.
Many of Alpha Phi Omega resident members are university and college scholars in various courses. Some have competed and won in academic competitions in the Philippines and abroad. And some, if not many, have graduated with honors and recognitions. Members who have brought honors and glory for Alpha Phi Omega are recognized in a testimonial dinner or party. In 2006, the U.P. Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity was a member of the Software Freedom (SFD) Team Philippines that won international prize in the Software Freedom Day Competitions and, was among the organizers of the SFD 2006 Celebration in the Philippines.
The Fraternity had already produced topnotchers in the Bar exams and licensure examinations in Medicine, Geology, Architecture, Engineering, and others. The recent achievement was brought by Engr. Eric Christian V. Cruz ’03 who landed 8th in the 2008 Civil Engineer Licensure Examination and Engr. Nizar Jameson G. Palayad ’02 who ranked 8th in the 2007 Geodetic Engineer Licensure Examination. It had also produced brothers who were members of the international honor societies like Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Gamma Mu.
Alpha Phi Omega has ample venues to prepare members to become successful professionals in the future. As a testament to this, two U.P. APO alumni received honors as outstanding professionals in 2007: Professor Emeritus Melithon U. Ordillas, Jr. ’57 with Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) Outstanding Professional of the Year Award in the field of Metallurgical Engineering and Past Grand Chancellor Tomas C. Banguis, Jr. ’60 with UP Alumni Association Outstanding Professional Award in the field of business administration and advertising.
To further promote scholarship amongst the resident members, the U.P. APO Alumni Association formulated the scholarship program for deserving and financially needy members. Several beneficiary members are now successful individuals working in the public and private sector. To date, the Alumni extend the scope of the said scholarship due in part to the formation of the U.P. Alpha Phi Omega International Service Foundation (UPAPOISF). The Foundation is currently sponsoring twelve (12) scholars from various disciplines, under the ETA for Excellence Scholarship Program and Gabay sa Pag-aaral Educational Assistance Program – a step by step to realizing the Foundation’s mission for youth development.
Promotion of Exceptional Leadership
Alpha Phi Omega offers varied opportunities for brothers and sisters to become leaders. It develops not just leaders, but outstanding and exceptional leaders. Through leadership development programs, members develop themselves and aspire for greater things in life. Leadership trainings, seminar and conferences are provided not only for members but also for other sectors of society especially the youth.
Alpha Phi Omega’s Roll of Past Chancellors and Officers contains many distinguished personalities in various fields of endeavor. Its membership would produce successful leaders serving the government in the Executive, the Legislative, the Judiciary, the Military, in legal profession, in business, in banking and finance, and in the academe. From the Fraternity’s roster comes past and present officials of the University of the Philippines as well.
The resident members are trained to handle responsibilities outside the fraternity or sorority circle. They have been exposed to campus politics, designated to handle projects, encouraged to lead other organizations, and trained at campus and other publications. In student politics, the Fraternity is a campus force to reckon with; many of the mebers became officers of the U.P. Student Council, writers of the Philippine Collegian and other publications, heads of other organizations and formations, officers of dormitory or house councils, and leaders of alliances.
